Mr. Frank J. Mazzeo
Frank J. Mazzeo
Frank J. Mazzeo, born Aug.6, 1922 was raised by a loving mother and a hard working father in the Catholic tradition of believing in JESUS and obeying HIS teachings. He dropped out of high school and later got his GED diploma after being discharged from the Army Air Force. Then he graduated as a Radio Operator Mechanic. After 4 or 5 weeks of exercise and marching he was assigned to the Air Transport Command. His thoughts were, “Where ever they send me GOD, I`m in Your hands.” Heloved the thrill of flying! Frank placed his trust in GOD, and had his Bible that he read every night. Frank was most fortunate, unharmed and honorably discharged on Oct. 24, 1945 as a S/Sgt. In 1947 he was hired as a Filing Clerk for the Veterans Administration. A year later he took and passed a Federal Exam and was hired as a Railway Mail Clerk. On May 20, 1948 Frank married his love, Sue. He has 2 kids. On Feb.8, 1965, Sue died of cancer at the age of 36. On June 6, 1978 Frank moved to Florida to start a new life. He purchased an apartment he liked, and decorated it according to his taste. He was very contented, read his bible often and thanked GOD for HIS blessings and generosity. One day, he realized he needed a copy of “The Ten Commandments” to hang on his living room wall. He was disappointed to find the Ten Commandments on 2 Tablets indicating the Ten Commandments as Roman numerals instead of GOD‘S actual words. He then decided to create his own design of the Ten Commandments.Frank came up with the idea of an eye catching befitting natural design around the Ten Commandments that might get peoples attention to stop and read them and hopefully live by GOD‘S beautiful scriptures. He was finally satisfied with the design he had discreetly put together. On Jan. 30, 1995, his copyright lawyer called, and told him a Copyright had been issued for his design and was listed as he had named it, ‘THE RELIGIOUS CONSTITUTION OF LIFE.” Mr. Mazzeo is a reader of Al-Hikmat Muslim Magazine and has recently donated a Printer/Copier/Fax machine to Al-Hikmat office.

ZAHID HUSAIN QURESHI M.D.
For
The Month Of December 2010
Islamic Foundation of South Florida (IFSF)
IFSF Originally from India, Dr. Zahid Husain Qureshicompleted his medical training in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to South Florida in 1984 and began practice in the field of Internal Medicine. He came from a family with strong Islamic values that placed education on a high priority. While raising a young family the need for Islamic Education became very apparent. With the help of ahandful of dedicated families a weekend Islamic School was established in 1989 and named “The School of Islamic Studies of Broward”.This became very popular amongst parents with similar concerns and approximately 250 students have attended this school each year over the past 20 years. The community’s needs grew and the need for our own facility and place of worship led to the acquisition of a warehouse in Sunrise that served this purpose after remodeling for years. In 2000 again due to community and parental needs a fulltime Islamic School was founded, namely “Salah Tawfik Elementary and Middle School”. This has grown over the past 10years with an average enrollment of 150 to 175 students. The Muslim community has been growing at a rapid pace in South Florida and in keeping with the consequent demands a new facility’s construction was undertaken and completed in 2008. Al-Hamdulillah, this new Islamic Center named, Islamic Foundation of South Florida (IFSF) has a campus of 11.5 acres with a Fulltime School and Daycare facilities with state of the art computer lab, library and playgrounds. Weekend School activities continue on Friday night. The community gathers in large numbers for classes generated by Imam Yahya. Although this is a great achievement for our community this project was plagued with serious challenges along the way in terms of construction and financial issues that had to be dealt with on a daily basis in a patient and painstaking manner. The mission of completing this work took all the time and resources one could gather. After September 11th, 2001 the ability to raise funds for this Islamic Project became more difficult and many openly voiced criticism of such a project ever coming to fruition. Despite these hardships, with the grace of Allah we have come a long way,Al-Hamdulillah. Now the challenge remains which is to maintain and grow the Islamic Center and its services to the community in most excellent manner most pleasing to Allah (SWT).At this point an active effort to reach out to the younger generation to carry the mission forward is being sought after without which we can not progress. “I feel that the younger members of our community need to step forward and utilize their talents and resources to benefit this cause. Lessons in humbleness and patience as taught by the Seerah of our beloved Prophet SAW and any advice from elders in our community will Inshaa Allaah guide the future generations in the tasks that lay ahead,” said Dr. Zahid Qureshi.

Hafiza Iffath Hassan
For
The Month Of October 2010
Hafiza Iffath Hassan and her family have strived, starting with themselves, their children and working outwards, to bring the teachings of the Quran to the community. For the last seventeen years, every Saturday - rain or shine, snow or ice - Sister Iffath volunteers to teach the meaning of the Quran to women at the Muslim Society Inc. in Bloomingdale, Illinois. Then, on Sundays, she shares the knowledge God has blessed her with at the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park. During the week she teaches Quran at the Institute of Islamic Education in Elgin. But that’s not all – she also tries to spread the message of Islam in cyberspace with her “Lesson of the Day” blog that sends inspirational quotes from the Quran, Hadith, scholars and poets right to your inbox.“As I always enjoyed reading, my father suggested that when I come upon something that speaks to my heart, I should make a note of it,” she says. “Five years ago, I decided to email part of my notes so that more people can benefit from it. Then, to my surprise, my son created a blog for me and taught me how to maintain it.”Sister Iffath completed Hifz (memorization of the entire Quran) at the age of 37 proving that one does not need to give up if he or she didn’t memorize earlier on in life. What began as a quest to commit two juz (parts) to memory, in order to add some variety to her prayer, ended at completion of the entire 30 juz. “After a year had passed and I had memorized 10 juz, I said to myself, “How can I stop now when Allah has made it so easy for me?” Her children used to test her on the portions she had memorized, helping her review easily at home. The cycle continues as now her son is also a Hafiz and she teaches Hifz to girls in Elgin. Sister Iffath has also authored “Quranic Language Made Easy” to help readers with the grammar of the Quran so they can grasp the meaning of the Sacred Verses more easily. While Sister Iffath’s halaqas (Islamic talk groups) are well-attended, she believes that there is still a need to invite more youth to spiritual lessons. She agrees that social work is crucial and a great starting point to attract the youth, but believes that both knowledge and action need to work hand in hand. She also feels that a greater variety of people would start attending Islamic sessions, as opposed to coffee mornings and dinner parties, if they are open to change and believe they need to know more. If they are content with their knowledge of Islam, they will not have that thirst or yearning to find places that feed the spirit and not just the body.
