The passing away of the Late Maulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri is a great loss to the world and those who are in the field of knowledge. It was indeed an opportunity and favor to be a student of the late Maulana Anzar Shah. Twenty-eight years ago Maulana Anzar was my teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband Islamic University in India. In addition, he was also my guide and adviser. He was not only known as a top Islamic scholar and lecturer among Muslims, but was also highly recognized by the Government of India as the voice of Islam. Thousands would gather to listen to his message and words of advice, for he was known as a great orator of the time. Maulana Anzar Shah was a great ‘Alim and Muhaddith. Hazrat Maulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri (r.a.) - son of the great luminary, Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (r.a.), was 82 years of age when he departed this world on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in India. The Maulana was known as an authority on tafseer, Sharia and Hadith. He wrote several books on ‘Hadith,’ ‘fiqh’ and Islamic law. The Maulana served as the Dean of Islamic jurisprudence in Darul Uloom Deoband, the oldest and largest Islamic University in India. He established an Islamic Institute, Jamia Anwar, in memory of his father. He was tutored by his illustrious father Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri, Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madni and Qari Mohammad Taiyyab, who was the longest serving Chancellor of the Darul Uloom, Deoband. Maulana Anzar was laid to rest in Deoband in the presence of thousands of mourners. He will be greatly missed by his thousands of students all over the world, for he has been teaching Qur’aan and Hadith for over half a century.
