Love for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)
Love for the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) is completed and perfected only when our love for the Prophet exceeds our love for everything else in this world, including our own lives. The Holy Qur’an says: “The Prophet has a greater claim on the believers than they have on themselves...” (33:6) This verse confirms what it takes to be a believer: preferring the Prophet S.A.W. over one’s own life. In Hadith the Prophet S.A.W. said: “None of you is a believer until I am dearer to him than his children, his parents and all mankind.” (as reported by Bukhari and Muslim) Some versions add: “his life, his wealth and his family.” This hadith certifies why we should love the Prophet S.A.W.; he is our teacher, guide and leader.
Therefore, it is impossible for us to practice Islam without love for the Holy Prophet S.A.W. and his Sunnah. Love for the Holy Prophet S.A.W. Sunnah puts us on the road to perfection and helps us to recognize our weakness as human beings and helps us to live in peace with ourselves as true servants of Allaah. The Prophet’s love was not limited just to the believers. He loved all of God’s creation. His pattern/conduct is for all human beings God says in the Qur’aan: “We have not sent you (O Prophet) but as a Rahmah (mercy) to all the worlds.” (21:107) The Prophet S.A.W. had to struggle with those who were bent on doing oppression/injustice on others.
He had to remind them of Allaah’s commandments and guidance. While it was easy to leave such people alone, he the Prophet S.A.W. with a tremendous amount of love and courage tried his best to help them. The Prophet S.A.W. motivated others, including his opponents by his mercy, kindness and love. The Prophet’s S.A.W. love for mankind was such; even though he faced great sufferings at the hands of his opponents; he still forgave them with ease after his victory of Makkah. The Holy Prophet S.A.W. suffered for many years while spreading the message of Islam. Just before he started his mission he had everything that men generally hope for: health, a prosperous business, a loving wife, fine children, faithful relatives and friends as well as the trust and respect of his fellow citizens.
If he wanted he could have led as comfortable a life as anyone in Makkah. But he chose the road of suffering and hardship. He did so out of love and mercy for the very people who ignorantly persecuted him. Allaah’s love for the Holy Prophet is such that Allaah says in the Holy Qur’aan,“ Certainly, Allaah and His angel send salutations on the Prophet. O believers! send salutations on the Prophet with all due respect.” (33:56) “Say (to mankind O Muhammad), If you love Allaah, follow me (and) Allaah will love you...” (3:31)
Allaah Knows Best
