With the rapid growth of Islam in the world today, the need for more Masaajid would be in greater demand. Therefore, one doesn’t question the importance and virtues of building Masaajid, for Allaah has promised a house in paradise for those who build a Masjid in this world. However, this should be done in accordance with the guidelines of Qur’aan and Sunnah.
The purpose of a Masjid should be for prayer, education and Dawah services, etc. Wasting money on unnecessary renovations, expansions and the purchasing of land etc, should not be done for show and competition, especially if it doesn’t fulfill the spiritual and educational needs of the community.
The following are references to support this Islamic guideline. In the Holy Qur’aan chapter: 7 verse: 31 Allaah says" O children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: but waste not by excess for Allaah loveth not the wasters. " Having a nice Masjid is good, but wasting is forbidden. Anas R.A reports that the Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W) said: "The Hour will not come to pass until the people vie with each other in (building) the mosques." This is related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, anNasa’i, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban who calls it sahih. Ibn Khuzaimah’s wording is: "A time will come when the people will vie with each other in (building) the mosques, but very few will attend (the mosques)."Ibn ‘Abbas reports that the Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W) said: "I have not been ordered to build high and lofty mosques (Bukhari). Aisha R.A Narrated, the Apostle of Allaah (peace be upon him) commanded us to build mosques in different localities (i.e. in the locality of each tribe separately) and that they should be kept clean and be perfumed (Dawood).
The above Ahadith confirms what we see happening in the world today with extravagance in building Masaajid for show. Muslim Organizations should establish smaller Masaajid in the localities, so people could to pray Salaah five times per day, as apposed to one massive building far away from the community which is only used for Jumua and Eid. Rather than wasting money on unnecessary buildings, Muslim Organizations should spend the money in some of the following areas: (a) Educational and Dawah materials for Non-Muslims (b) Have a special fund to help the poorer Muslims in the community, rather than giving them a few dollars only for Eid. (c) Have a full time person to do Dawah in the community I hope and pray that Muslim Organizations and their board of directors would not be offended by this message, but would rather pray for me and take the advice from the Qur’aan and Sunnah. AMEEN
