One of the most fundamental characteristic of a Muslim is piety and humility. A Muslim should be humble and kind with people. Allaah says in Chapter 31 Verses 18 & 19"And swell not thy cheek (with pride) at men nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allaah loveth not any arrogant boaster. "And be moderate in thy pace and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the donkey. Muslims are expected to control their passion and desires.
A Muslim should not be vain or attached to the unnecessary pleasures of this world. While most people allow the material world to fill their hearts, Muslims should keep Allaah (SWT) in their hearts and the world in their hands. Instead of being attached to the car, the job, the bank accounts etc. - one should use these things as tools to better oneself and help others, rather than allowing oneself to be controlled by materialistic things. Chapter 18 Verse:46 "Wealth and sons are allurements of the life of this world: but the things that endure Good Deeds are best in the sight of thy Lord as rewards and best as (the foundation for) hopes".
In another verse Allaah says in chapter 2 verse 177: " It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Book and the Messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him for your kin for orphans for the needy for the wayfarer for those who ask and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth the Allah-fearing".
The key to virtue and good conduct is a strong relation with Allaah, who knows the secrets of the hearts and the intentions behind all actions. The love and continuous awareness of Allaah enables man to be good in conduct and sincere in intentions, with devotion and dedication, for Allaah says in chapter 49 verse 13,"Indeed, the most honorable among you in the sight of Allaah is the most pious."
